I believe... *fill in the blank.*
I believe Belief is one of the strongest things humans have, that also make them who they are. Make them humans. We use belief daily in our life, without even realizing it. For instance, whether you drive to school or work or a work-out class, it doesn't matter, you are submitting yourself to the belief that you will be safe driving in a car. You will survive, and you will make it to whatever activity or event you have, alive, on time, completely fine, and in one piece. There's religion, there's believing in the universe (car example), and there's believing in ourselves.
Religion stems from beliefs created years ago. Religion is in itself a whole bigger power, but who started believing in religion? Us, humans. This makes people both feel better and worse. At least in the case of Orthodoxy, the beliefs were created by people who firsthand saw and believed Jesus. And it was passed down, the beliefs remained unchanged. But some people would rather believe the "humans are imperfect" side of things. We are humans and we make mistakes and we created religion therefore religion must be flawed. That's where atheists come into play. Religion and belief is a choice. It is the choicest-choice ever.
My point is, you and you alone are the only factor that contributes to belief. You can choose to believe just as easily as you can choose not to believe.
The car example is what I would call believing in the universe. There will always be atheists, people who are not religious. Even when you're not religious, which can arguably give life meaning, which some people crave, you can still find meaning in life. I will have a blog post called "Meaning" talking about this.
And belief can affect mental health too. You can choose to be okay or you can choose to not be okay. This may be a very controversial statement to make, and I understand that there can be other factors at play too. But that doesn't change the fact that you can, largely, decide your own mental state.
The biggest thing about belief that has affected my life is that it can be very hard when all the people around you have differing opinions. It makes you question your own, which can be very dangerous to your health and happiness. Being that confused just isn't good. What I mean by that is not "don't listen to anyone else" but you have to find a balance where you trust yourself and you trust other people. You listen to them, but you have your own opinions and they stay true to you until- they don't. They may change or they may not, based on other people, or based on yourself. And you always can feel in your gut if you are starting to change. The world would be a wreck if nobody could trust themselves. ~Masha
