Caffeine effects on me

Sometimes I drink straight up coffee late at night. And I don’t really believe it hinders my ability to sleep, or ever has?
So I don’t really understand what caffeine does do to me.
Sometimes it definitely…”works,” or the very least does do something. Because it’ll make me shake a lot. If I have too much of it. Or on an empty stomach or something.
This is never pleasant, and it even makes me scared because surgeons need steady hands. So then why do I even drink coffee, for the taste? I would like to keep it, but not risk it. Can’t have shaky hands. Because the effects are definitely…confusing. Not making me that alert (not hard to fall asleep) or shaky? Sometimes I swear at a certain time coffee can even make me sleepy.
Can caffeine make you more tired than you were?
Another reason why I don’t get energy drinks. Why drink them, if they’re so bad for you, if they just make you shaky? The fact that they even possess the potential to make you shaky (on an empty stomach or whatever else it may be) shouldn’t that be enough?
