I always thought that everybody wanted meaning out of their life. What I came to learn, though, is that that is to some extent not the case. Meaning in itself is a very vague word. It is so vague it almost like an emotion. What gives humans meaning? What gives YOU meaning?
There are some common things that can give individuals meaning. Some examples include: dreams, hopes, religion, love, and career.
Day to day, life can seem very meaningless. As a teenager: you go to school 5x a week, you come home on the bus everyday. You get hung up on small moments thinking "what is the point of them? Why am I here?" Luckily, from a religious standpoint: you can say that God created you for a reason. And that can give us peace, at least until we find that reason.
A lot of people find reason within a career. Take a surgeon, for example. Their role in life is very clear and full of gratitude. They save lives, they make people alive, and their family and friends very happy. They have a very fulfilling, successful career. So much so, that that alone, makes them have a very successful life. But people usually don't stop just there. Have you ever wondered why helping people or even gifting a gift makes us feel so good inside, in a very true and pure way? We as humans generally want to help people. It makes us feel good because it gives us meaning and it's very gratifying to see ourselves perform such a good task. Giving a gift is just a small percentage of that. It also shows the person that we care for them and that they too, have meaning in life/general/and in our lives specifically.
So religion and career can give us meaning. Tied in very closely with career, our dreams and hopes in general can give us meaning too. Even if we don't have a crazy career goal such as Surgeon, a dream or hope such as publishing a song, novel, blog, can be plenty to make us feel as we made a mark on the world.
It's not about pride, it's about meaning. It's about feeling good because we're doing something meaningful and good.
And lastly, love. The phrase "we live for people" is very much true. That has already been seen through the above examples, and how connected we are to people by loving to help them. Because that (again: religious standpoint) is also why we're here. But we're not just here for people, we're here for us. We're all individuals and completely different with different ideas are a reason, and I believe it is our duty to figure out who we are and our place on this earth. We don't need to be president or crowned a king or queen to have meaning. Even if we just positively change one person's life, that is enough. Of course, most people choose to be well-rounded, and accomplish many different things and goals throughout their life. Again, it's about feeling good.
Let Me Know What You Think!!!☺
