Uses of Writing

Why write, you ask? I can give you plenty of reasons; plenty of purposes!

For the purposes of this blog post, when I say "write" I mean journal writing pretty much - whether it's digital or on paper.

  1. Therapy. Is expensive. Or at least that's the word on the street. But what is therapy really? It's just talking out your thoughts to someone. Well, you can do the same thing on paper (or computer) and frankly, it's less scary! (That probably doesn't require an explanation but also read "Maybe why writers like writing"). No one can judge you in your journal - no one but yourself, and that's not really scary. Writing is therapy if you're writing about your problems. Writing is also therapy if...

  2. You don't even know what you would say! Say you sign up for therapy, but your problems are so confusing that you don't even know how to PUT it in words, well writing is a great way to start! (I literally feel like I'm advertising a product rn).

  3. Prayer. Writing can also be prayer. Prayer subjects include: things you are grateful for, things you need help with (relationship problems, personal problems, fears), and I don't know about you guys, but those are pretty much the same topics I write about when I journal. Especially the "things you need help with" though, because you are actively trying to find solutions to you know, make things better!

  4. Writing can help you rant, and let off steam when maybe doing it to a person isn't the best idea (don't you agree?!!). Plus, writing can help you figure your problems out. A lot of the times "just thinking" doesn't do the trick. I have an interest in thoughts actually (Also read: "Long Time No Blog...Let's Catch Up!😳 How Do Thoughts Work...What Do YOU Think?) and I don't totally understand (Perhaps you do?! Comment!) , but I do know this. Oftentimes, it feels like you are swimming in your brain, you just are having so many thoughts ALL AT ONCE! How do you understand or figure ANY of your problems out like this? Writing focuses you, honestly probably better than even talking to someone (so therapy) because when we talk to someone, we often get side-tracked or think of OTHER things we want to tell that person, thus making us forget our original train of thought. I talked to a friend recently about all this, and she thinks "talking to yourself" is a better alternative to writing for her. I mean, I guess it could work! It also focuses yourself and isn't embarrassing, unlike talking to someone (therapy). But, talking to yourself is kind-of weird in my opinion (I'm curious if you agree or disagree lol, so comment!) but if it works for you then it...well...works for you! Plus, that could potentially be embarrassing. Also, your throat might get dry, lol!

Overall, if you currently don't utilize writing then I'd say it's an awesome tool that can really help. I recommend writing for all the reasons above, and probably many more!

What do you think? Comment! Also comment if you are interested in another blog post about writing, perhaps one where I focus more on different types of writing and what you can use it for (journal vs. novel vs. poetry) and that type of thing.
